Looking to continuously upgrade their software and the iDrive system as a whole, BMW just announced that the Navigation System Professional will be upgraded using over the air technology through the SIM cards installed in the latest models from Bavaria.
In case you don’t own a smartphone or you’re just not too tech savvy, over the air technology means that the navigation maps will be updated just like any other software, the data being sent out by BMW to you vehicle as soon as possible, keeping you up to date with the latest developments on your route.

Even fuel prices will be updated on a regular, and they will be displayed, upon request, on the navigation screen, allowing you to choose the best price out there. At first, this option will only be available in Germany, starting with July 2014, with other countries soon to follow.

All these services will be available through BMW online and they won’t be no extra charges or transmission costs for the end user, according to the company.

The communication between BMW cars on the road and the headquarters that gathers all the relevant data from the traffic will then help create alternate routes for drivers that will eventually lead to an overall decongestion of traffic.

The updates will be sent out to the cars several times a year and the system will be automatically updated with no extra charges and requiring no input from the driver. During the updating process, the navigation system will work just fine, all functions still being available without any restrictions.
