BMW 8 Series Coupe Rendering Is a Beautiful Idea that Won't Die

Even as BMW is turning its head towards the mainstream with cars like the FWD 2 Series Active Tourer, hardcore fans of the brand "as it used to be" demand they build flagships, like the M1, like the 8 Series.
That's because flagships get more attention and grab headlines, forever shaping the image of a brand. Back in the early 90s, the Bavarians built a massive grand tourer called the 8 Series, which came with V8 and V12 engines and substantially more 'wow' factor than a 6 Series.

With Mercedes not shying away from V12 engines, people are demanding BWM offer the same number of cylinder a new 8 Series. To receive as warm a
welcome as the old car, it would have to be pretty special, especially from a design point of view.

The Gran Lusso Concept revealed at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2013 is a great place to start. Designed by Pininfarina, it looks different to any of the cars BMW themselves sell, which is actually a good thing. A true rival for the S-Class Coupe would have to receive big engines, more advanced technology and superior performance, maybe even to the M6.

It's a tall order, but if "BMW" is to be synonymous with power and performance once mere, it has to be done.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
