German automaker Audi has beaten Mercedes and BMW to it, reportedly signing a deal allowing them the first option on purchasing Italian superbike maker Ducati. Official world should be out by mid-April, announcing a deal that could end up costing the Germans no less than €850 billion ($1.12 billion), according to Bloomberg.
This is all part of VW Group’s ambitions plant to acquire a major bike manufacturer, which started out in 2008 when the Germans were outbid by the current owner, Investindustrial.
But what does Audi stand to gain from making vehicles that only deliver power through one wheel. For starters, the rivalry with BMW would be extended into the two-wheeled battlefield. In addition to the marketing schemes they could come up with, Ducati’s expertise in making lightweight engines could prove beneficial to the auto industry.
