Audi is taking steps towards the electric cars of tomorrow and has updated the A1 e-tron trial car with more power. The electric motor under the supermini's bonnet now produces 115 PS (85 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, which enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds, which is sort of 1.2 TSI performance. Top speed remains electronically limited, to 130 km/h (81 mph).
By comparison, the old A1 e-tron revealed in 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show had only 102 PS of peak power and only 240 Nm of torque.
80 of these A1 e-trons are participating in the German federal government's Electromobility Showcase initiative by taking part in 6 projects taking place in 3 German states. Audi expects that participants will travel a combined 1 million kilometers or about 600,000 miles.
Each car has an electric range of 50 km in ideal conditions, thanks to a T-shaped battery which provides 13.3 kWh of electricity. To deal with the problem of range anxiety, the A1 e-tron is also fitted with a small 32 PS rotary engine that acts as a generator.
