AT&T to Provide Wireless Systems in BMWs

Wireless services, be them traffic information, safety or infotainment functions, have become a must-have in most vehicles out there although their price remains pretty high. From this point of view, their availability is still limited nowadays and only premium cars are equipped, either as standard or optional, with such features.

BMW however decided to focus more on wireless services so it recently signed an agreement with AT&T for an enhanced suite of connected service to be delivered through the company's mobile broadband network. BMW already has such suite, called BMW Assist, but the new agreement will further expand the company's offering in this respect.

"This is an exciting opportunity," said Glenn Lurie, president, emerging devices, resale and partnerships, AT&T. "BMW has been an industry leader in the connected vehicle space for many years and we look forward to providing the wireless network that will keep drivers connected to the content and services they rely on."

The agreement between the two companies is still in its incipient stages, so BMW hasn't mentioned which are the models to benefit in the future from AT&T services. However, AT&T promises more information regarding both the services to be provided by the communications company and the name of the models to feature the products will be revealed at the launch of the products. In addition, contractual and financial details are not being disclosed for the time being, so more details will likely emerge soon.
