Since we’re all drivers here, the chances you’ve never seen a abandoned hubcap on the side of the road are close to zero. While for most of use the circle plastic caps are nothing but garbage once they fall off the wheels, for British artist Ptolemy they represent the raw material he’s about to turn into a truly amazing sculpture.
The British artist was born in south England but grew up in the north. He studied art and design to degree level at Bradford and Illkley Community College in the mid eighties. Ever since his graduation Ptolemy has traveled extensively and has worked at a variety of jobs, including theater set design and construction, stage design and construction and assorted large scale community art sculptural projects.

His real passion, however, is that of turning re-cycled materials into sculpture of natural form. The unique Earth-based cybernetic organisms look rather like creatures you’d find in a post apocalyptic world where artificial intelligence has won the war against human beings. But the way he uses the plastic caps, including the auto logos are quite interesting.

According to his website, Ptolemy is currently working with a variety of materials including shopping trolleys, scrap metal and car wheel trims which he re-shapes into a variety of life forms. You can even buy some of the artist’s work online, but it’s not going to come cheap.

For instance, an 84cm-long (33 inches) Lil Triggerfish with a Skoda logo in the middle will costs you £520 ($808), while the red 1,5-meter (3,2-foot) fox made out of car bumpers will cost you £6,000 ($9,329). Since we’re sure you already bought the right presents for Christmas we figured you might want to simply admire the man’s work so we put up a nice little photo gallery. Hope you like it.
