“Our system is truly competitive, it is working well with no problems. I think we will start the championship with it and without many concerns, but we have to test it first. I hope ours is better than the others,” Alonso was quoted as saying by Eurosport.
Although not officially announced, Renault's testing programme ahead of the 2009 season underwent some interesting modifications, being added one more testing session at Silverstone in mid-March. Therefore, the Enstone-based team will have enough time to test both the new KERS unit and the new aerodynamic package for 2009.
Following the poor lap times scored by Alonso at Algarve – first test of the season and maiden test-drive on the Renault R29 – technical director Pat Symonds revealed that his team is planning to make some major aerodynamic changes aimed to improve the car's performances. The first of those changes refer to the R29's nose, which will feature a restyling during the upcoming Jerez test next week.
However, Renault's developing KERS in time for the Australian Grand Prix in late March does not necessarily mean the Red Bull Racing – who use Renault engines in 2009 – will get to debut the unit too. RBR's team manager Christian Horner insisted that his team will only use KERS when they will have tested its reliability, use and safety.
