“They (Brawn) are on another level to everybody else. They're running rings around us because they are playing in another division. If the Court does nothing on April 14, you can assume that they will win 17 races,” argued Alonso in an interview for Spanish sports newspaper AS.
Renault and McLaren are believed to already head their financial resources in copying the rear diffuser design. Mercedes' motorsport boss Norbert Haug revealed McLaren needs to reconsider their rear design as quickly as possible, as he admitted the Woking-based team might have interpreted the rules in a wrong way.
Renault's Flavio Briatore also revealed that his team tested the revised parts in the wind tunnel and it showed a 15 percent improvement in terms of downforce as compared to the initial rear diffuser. He also argued that, if properly developed, the new system would create around 40% increased level of downforce in the near future. As revealed by Spanish newspaper Marca, Alonso is likely to drive a revised Renault R29 from as early as the Chinese Grand Prix.
The Spaniard also put a big question mark on the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, which he didn't find particularly helpful at Albert Park. He did, however, reckoned that the circuit's characteristics did not help either.
“It was not very useful. In terms of laptime we knew it doesn't give us an advantage, but I used it when I was right behind Glock - without a KERS - and the truth is that it was no help at all. At this circuit there was no benefit. But let's see what happens at tracks with very long straights, like Bahrain, or Monza,” added Alonso.
