With Google's I/O happening this week, Android Auto and Android Automotive received everybody's attention, especially as the search giant shared exciting news (such as a new project to bring more apps to both platforms).
However, Apple wanted CarPlay users to join the fun, so the iPhone maker revealed that iOS 18 will include several new features.

iOS 18 is the next big operating system update for iPhones, with Apple projected to release it in the fall, as per the company's typical launch schedule. The OS will be previewed next month at WWDC, its annual developer conference, with a beta build to be released shortly after the event.

Apple revealed that iOS 18 will include new accessibility features for CarPlay, such as Voice Control, Sound Recognition, and Color Filters.

Voice Control will allow users to control apps with their voice. It's not a Siri upgrade but an accessibility improvement, as Voice Control is already available on iPhones and MacBooks to let users control apps, click menus, and use any feature bundled with a specific app without touch.

Sound Recognition is a great improvement for users who are deaf or hard of hearing, as it can significantly upgrade the experience in the car by providing alerts for nearby sounds. For example, the feature can issue notifications when it detects a horn or a siren around the vehicle, so the driver can tell when an emergency vehicle is approaching.

The third new accessibility feature coming to CarPlay with iOS 18 is support for Color Filters. Users will be allowed to customize the CarPlay interface to make it easier to read, and Apple will also enable bold and large text in the car.

This isn't the only big news coming to CarPlay.

With WWDC on the radar, the Cupertino-based iPhone maker is likely preparing more big announcements for CarPlay, especially as the company needs to rethink its automotive strategy after the demise of the Apple Car. Its new focus is now CarPlay and Apple Maps, and the company must come up with big news fast. Android Auto and Android Automotive evolve at an incredible pace, so Apple must respond promptly.

Apple will launch the new-generation CarPlay this year, with Porsche and Aston Martin confirmed as the first carmakers to adopt the improved system. WWDC would be a good opportunity for the iPhone maker to share new CarPlay 2.0 news, including new brands offering the system in their cars.

Apple will unveil the next iPhone and release iOS 18 in September, and I expect the company to dedicate part of the event to its automotive ambitions. Apple Maps and CarPlay should be the main highlights, so in addition to WWDC, the tech firm should also plan further announcements for the fall.
