The latest series of guidelines are meant to help drivers protect their car during the high summer temperatures so they are not left stranded at the roadside because of it.
However, even with proper preventive maintenance, summer breakdowns can still occur, so AAA recommends every driver have a well-stocked emergency kit in their vehicle. The kit should include water, non-perishable food items, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, road flares or an emergency beacon, basic hand tools, and a first aid kit.
"While many drivers think about the importance of readying their vehicle for cold weather in winter, it's also important to not forget about the need to prepare for hot summer months," said Beth Mosher, AAA Chicago Director of Public Affairs.
"Many parts of the country are experiencing extreme heat, which can take its toll on vehicle components. However, a few preventive maintenance steps can help keep your vehicle running smoothly," continued Mosher.
AAA's five ways to protect the car from extreme heat are resumed below:
- check the battery to be mounted in place, clean any corrosive build up, and have it tested by a trained technician
- proper cooling system maintenance
- avoid excessive heat where the rubber meets the road
- check all fluids including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid to ensure they are filled to the appropriate levels
- maintain a comfortable driving environment with a operating air conditioning system
