Despite the recent rumors suggesting the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport might close its doors in 2009/10, the championship chairman Tony Teixeira yesterday announced the official calendar for the 5th year running of the series. In addition, the Portuguese official also confirmed a new partnership with media company IMG for the upcoming A1 GP season.
Earlier yesterday, several rumors appeared that Italian manufacturer Ferrari will pull the plug on their engine supply for the championship before the official start of the season. With almost a month to go, that would have meant the A1 GP officials would remain without an engine partner for 2009/10 and little time to replace Ferrari.
However, when announcing the series' new partner and the calendar for the 5th consecutive season, Teixeira was very confident of the A1 GP survival. And to sustain that feeling, the statement from the championship's CEO had Ferrari logos all over it.
“I have always had a long wish list of deals we wanted to make our series one of the most well known on the sporting calendar. A deal such as this was at the top of it, and to be associated with IMG Sports Media is just what we needed to ensure we have the best possible representation in this highly competitive market. The plans they have for us are exciting and innovative,” said Teixeira in the statement.
