Revealed in late 2023 for model year 2024, the fifth-generation Santa Fe has been hit with its first recall in the United States market. As per documents filed by Hyundai Motor America with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a software error may result in obstruction of the rearview camera image by a Trailer Parking Assist message.
The root cause of this concern is the rearview camera system's software logic, with said iffy logic causing a CAN communication error when shifting into reverse. Hyundai estimates that 18,206 crossovers were produced for the US market with the described software logic, namely vehicles produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama between December 2023 and April 2024.

Even though the last potentially affected vehicle was produced on April 2, the South Korean automaker states that revised software was implemented at the Alabama plant on March 6. The supplier of the rearview camera system software is – of course – the Mobis parts and service division.

Assembly plant workers identified the abnormality on February 28 during routine shipping quality confirmation of a Santa Fe. The Alabama-based facility informed the mothership in South Korea about said issue. The engineering team deduced that rearview camera software logic needs to be improved, then informed Hyundai Motor America about their findings. Prior to filing the recall documentation with the NHTSA, the company was aware of two unique incidents alleging the aforementioned condition in the US.

In addition to reducing rearward visibility and increasing the risk of a crash, the software-related issue also goes against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 111 for rear visibility. No later than June 1, dealers will be instructed to update the rearview camera system software at no charge whatsoever to affected owners. Mailed notifications will be sent via first-class mail by June 1 as well.

If you have recently taken delivery of a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe, you can easily determine if this recall affects your vehicle by calling Hyundai customer service or by entering the 17-character vehicle identification number on the automaker's recall portal. The federal agency's number for this recall is 24V-246, whereas Hyundai Motor America dubs it 258.

Advertised as "the adventurous compact SUV," the fifth-generation Santa Fe is pretty close to the Hyundai Palisade in terms of wheelbase. More specifically, we're dealing with 2,815 millimeters (110.8 inches) and 2,900 millimeters (114.2 inches), respectively. The base trim is $33,950 before destination, and not surprising in the least given its wheelbase, three-row seating is standard.

Five trims are available to configure in total, the most expensive being the $46,500 Calligraphy. Slotted bang in the middle of the range, the XRT is the one to have thanks to standard HTRAC all-wheel drive, a slightly higher ground clearance, all-terrain rubber, and a turbocharged 2.5-liter mill.

The company has recently published its Q1 2024 results in the United States market, revealing that Santa Fe moved 26,094 units in the first three months of the year. The Tucson remains the most popular Hyundai in this part of the world, with the compact crossover selling 45,509 units in Q1 2024.
