With the Dodge Challenger and Charger plus the Chevy Camaro bowing out soon, the seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang (S650) is set to remain the sole representative of the ICE-powered pony/muscle car realm. So, do you think it will shy away from donning the crown?
If we are to guess, the latest Mustang will not have any trouble donning the mantle of the king. After all, it's not Ford's fault they dared to keep the V8 spirit alive one more generation. At the same time, Stellantis ordained Dodge to prepare for the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT EV lifestyle and possibly a demotion to inline-six mills for the surviving models.

Also, General Motors decided to kill off the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro entirely (at least for now) with no successor in sight. We even heard that production of the final 2024MY will end sooner than anticipated – in late November for the Convertible and early December for the Coupe instead of next January. Oh well, are we surprised that everyone is focusing their cameras on the 2024 Mustang, then?

Not at all, as the first reports of crashed S650 units are surfacing (it's a Mustang thing, you know?) while the wiser owners are keeping the shenanigans confined to quarter-mile dragstrip launches. For example, some are playing with the Dark Horse, trying to decipher its best setting to drop below the 12-second ET. Others, on the other hand, think that even a Mustang GT will do the trick.

And there is no need to take our word for granted as we have a copiously cool example to put that endeavor into the proper racing perspective. As such, the good folks over at the racing-focused ImportRace channel on YouTube have a couple of nice brawls from Island Dragway in Great Meadows, New Jersey, focused on the 2024 Mustang GT (S650).

It's a light blue 2024 unit – a color that is seemingly everyone's favorite for the first model year of the S650 series. Anyway, the shade is not as important as adequately taking care of traction, as you will see during the first skirmish of the Coyote V8-powered muscle car against the mighty BMW X4 M Competition.

As it turned out, although you would think that a Mustang GT and a BMW X4 M Competition would be on relatively equal playing fields, as the Ford has up to 486 hp with the optional active exhaust and the S58-powered high-performance crossover SUV has 503 hp and the advantage of all-wheel drive to counter the higher weight, that was not the case here.

Instead, the Bavarian CUV immediately swerved out of control after the green light and almost crashed into the Christmas tree. Luckily, the driver recovered, but the race was already lost to the Mustang GT's 12.33s pass. Secondly, the feisty Blue Oval again tried – unsuccessfully – to duke it out with an import piece, a Lexus IS F, which also didn't go in a straight line and awarded another easy victory to the 12.29-second Mustang GT!
