GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd is the joint venture Toyota and the GAC Group set up in Guangzhou, China no fewer than 15 years ago, and as expected, some of the Japanese automaker’s global models are adapted for local production. Different nomenclatures are also possible, as it’s the case with the all-new Wildlander.
The first thing that looks weird on this compact crossover from Toyota is the Lexus-inspired spindle grille. All-wheel drive and a hybrid option are also available, and as expected, the Chinese brother of the RAV4 shares the GA-K platform with the global model, the Camry, Highlander, and the Lexus ES.

Auto.163.com.cn further reports about the Wildlander that LEDs are on the menu for the headlights and fog lights, and in terms of size, the newcomer is 4,665 millimeters long by 1,855 wide and 1,680 tall. The wheelbase stretches over 2,690 millimeters, an exact match of the RAV4 available stateside and in Europe.

More horizontal taillights are also featured, along with two types of CVT. The entry-level engine – a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder powerplant – makes do with 170 ponies as standard. Opting for the 2.5-liter hybrid option translates to 219 horsepower and an E-CVT tuned for Eco, Normal, and Sport driving.

Given the grille of the Wildlander and the front-end design of the Avalon, we could see Toyota adopt a version of the spindle grille from Lexus in the coming years. It’s also worth mentioning that styling from the Wildlander could trickle down to the global model with the introduction of the facelift (think 2021 at the latest).

The order books for the Wildlander are scheduled to open next month for the 2020 model year, and if you were wondering, GAC and Toyota also manufacture the C-HR in China. A second joint venture – between the FAW Group and Toyota – has a different version of the C-HR rebadged Izoa. Both models are available as EVs too.

Based on looks alone, what would you choose between the RAV4 and Wildlander?
