Porsche is preparing the 2017 Panamera, and the development of the vehicle has reached the Nurburgring testing phase.
Not all carmakers test their cars on the Nurburgring, as there is no point for this in some models, but Porsche has to go the extra mile because of its heritage and customer expectations.
The new Panamera features an all-new platform called MSB, which is a mixed-material modular solution.
Porsche uses high-strength steel, aluminum, and composite materials for their MSB platform. According to company insiders, the new Panamera is expected to shave around 200 lbs (approximately 100 kg) when compared to the current model, all thanks to this platform.
A modified version of the same platform is said to be used by the next generation of the Bentley Continental. Concerning design, the prototype of the 2017 Panamera seen in the extensive photo gallery was almost undisguised.
However, Porsche did fit the car with a set of photo-realistic stickers to hide the tail lights and headlights. We expect to see more photos like these in the coming weeks and months, as Nurburgring testing implies numerous tweaks and changes.
Overall, the MY 2017 Panamera reminds us of the 2012 Panamera Sport Turismo concept, except the shooting brake part, the latter being turned into a separate version of the four-door Porsche.
Looking at the photos in this gallery, you cannot help but notice that the engineers are hard at work while driving the famous “Green Hell,” as they use professional racing gloves and a set of racing helmets. The prototype even features a roll-cage, just in case things go sour for the testing team.
The front bumper hides a set of intercoolers, and the generously sized alloy wheels conceal a set of performance brake discs, with calipers to match. The prototype has a mock-up rear wing, which will not enter production in the form seen in this gallery. The unit could be retractable and only pop-up when necessary.
