Asian manufacturers know that their marketing strategy has to change and that, unfortunately, they have to leave their roots behind. That’s why Kia, Hyundai and others are now using European-based research labs and development grounds for their new cars. They know that it looks good to say that their products were developed on the old continent and not back home.
That’s the unfortunate truth, people still believe the myth of German reliability and anything remotely connected to Germany has to be good from an engineering point of view. That being said, our spy photographers just caught the 2017 Hyundai Equus out testing in the aforementioned country, looking as camouflaged as ever.

It’s rather peculiar to see it being tested here since the car is not available for sale anywhere in the EU let alone Germany but yet again, as we said, marketing demands it so the engineers have to adapt.

As far as making out new details goes, we should point to the LED daytime running lights up front, on the lower side of the bumper, as well as the new grilles and intakes.

From the looks of things, the new Equus will also carry some German styling in its future design, the rear end looking eerily similar to the current S-Class, with cut down round taillights. That’s a clear indication as to what Hyundai’s intentions are with the new Equus, a car that is supposed to take on BMW, Mercedes and Audi offerings in the flagship territory.

Under the bonnet we’re expecting the same 5-liter V8 used up until now but with better numbers and efficiency at the same time. Considering how things are going these days, a smaller, turbocharged mill should also make its way in the engine bay, possibly a 3.3-liter V6 unit if we’re to believe the latest rumors.

The 2017 Hyundai Equus will be using the same platform as the Genesis sedan and will adhere to the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language launched by the Korean manufacturer. That means we won’t get to see drastic changes in the way it looks. However, in terms of technical improvements, a 10-speed automatic gearbox is rumored as well as an optional all-wheel drive system.

The interior was spied back in March and showed wooden inserts on the dash, door panels and center console, along with chrome trims. Everything looked roomy while the legroom in the back was more than enough even for the most pretentious customers. As for a possible launch date, it’s being rumored that the 2016 New York Auto Show might be the perfect moment for a world premiere.
