After a teaser photo released by Toyota and two more generous images showing the new Prius bare naked, the Japanese carmaker took another step forward and presented the 2016 Toyota Prius as scheduled, in Las Vegas.
Since we're talking about a highly-anticipated model, we'll cut straight to the chase with the new 2016 Prius. Therefore, let's start with appearance-related matters.

On the outside, Toyota claims the new 2016 Prius was "inspired by a runner in the starting blocks", although we can spot several design cues coming from the brand's Mirai fuel cell electric car.

It's a rather peculiar design, we'll give you that, but that shouldn't take us by surprise especially since the first generation Prius proposed a similar design approach. Plus, we already knew how the car would look like courtesy of the two spyshots we showed you earlier this month.

The front fascia is dominated by a pair of LED headlights offered as standard equipment while at the back the same LED treatment was applied. Seven exterior colors are available at launch, including a new hue from Toyota, namely the Hypersonic Red you'll be able to spot in the photo gallery.

As we saw in previous batches of spyshots, the new 2016 Prius will greet customers with a wrap-around dash design, with a wide instrument panel and "premium white ornamentation", which to us looks like the white counterpart of Piano Black.

The hybrid sits on Toyota's new TNGA platform and in terms of dimensions, it is 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.8 inches lower than the model it replaces. As a result, the car's center of gravity is now lower than before, and Toyota officials tell us "the height of the Prius’ front badge is exactly the same as that of Scion’s FR-S sports car."

Powertrain and technology

Unfortunately, Toyota didn't release official data on the new Prius' powertrain, but we are being told the hybrid features a rear double wishbone suspension and a 60 percent more rigid body.

Moreover, the new Prius boasts over 40 percent thermal efficiency - that's better than any current production model - allowing it to provide an efficiency improved by 10 percent.

Until we get our hands on more detailed figures, we'll have to live with these claims. On the safety side, Toyota granted the new 2016 Prius their Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) bundle, which offers features like Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and the Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

“What was once a rational purchase that for many customers focused on fuel economy, is now so much more. This Prius will invite new drivers into the category by delivering an impressive look and feel, built on the foundation of safety and eco-consciousness that define the vehicle’s heritage,” explained Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division.
