The new 1 Series facelift was just unveiled and I already told you that I absolutely love its design. The thing is, that’s only half of the facelift as BMW also decided to bring a completely new family of engines to the forefront.
We told you that the new B-family of engines will be introduced on the new model but we didn’t know exactly to which extent these changes will reach. Now, we have a clear idea and we’re absolutely blown away by the new numbers.

Apart from replacing some mills here and there, the new range also comes with a couple of new models altogether but don’t worry, I’ll guide you through all of them as they can be somewhat confusing.

Petrol models

In the petrol range we now have 5 models, the same number as before but with different names and specifications. The 114i model is gone and its place was taken by a new moniker, the 120i that wasn’t included in the range so far. The list goes like this:

- the 116i with a 3-cylinder turbocharged 1.5-liter B38 engine, making 109 HP (27 less than the pre-facelift model) and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque (40 Nm / 29 lb-ft less). Fuel consumption is rated between 5.4 to 5 l/100 km (52.3 - 56.4 mpg imp) which is slightly better than before. CO2 emissions: 126 – 116 g/km, exhaust standard: EU6.

- the 118i now uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged mill which is a carryover from the current range. It makes 136 HP (34 HP less) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque (30 Nm/22 lb-ft less). Average fuel consumption is 5.7 – 5.4 liters (5.9 –5.6 liters)/100 kilometers [49.6 – 52.3 (47.9 – 50.4) mpg imp] with CO2 emissions sitting at 133 – 125 g/km (137 – 129 g/km), exhaust standard: EU6.

- the brand new 120i uses a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged mill making 177 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The acceleration figures stand at 7.4 seconds with the manual, 7.2 seconds with the automatic 8-speed box. Average fuel consumption sits between 6 and 5.6 liters per 100 km (47.1 - 50.4 mpg imp).

- the 125i has the same plant taken up to 218 HP and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. It will do 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds with the automatic and 0.2 seconds slower with the manual. Average fuel consumption: 6.7 – 6.6 litres (6.5 – 6.3 litres)/100 kilometres [42.2 – 42.8 (43.5 – 44.8) mpg imp]. CO2 emissions stand at 157 – 154 g/km (151 – 148 g/km), exhaust standard: EU6.

- the M135i and M135i xDrive models got a small power bump and are now making 326 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, just  like the M235i models. Acceleration takes 4.9 seconds with the automatic for the RWD model and 0.2 seconds less for the xDrive version so there’s no change here as there’s no change in fuel consumption either.

Diesel models

As I said, the diesel range got no less than 5 new engines. They are all part of the new B family of plants and are more efficient than ever. The list goes like this:

- 116d EfficientDynamics edition: 3-cylinder 1.5-liter B37 engine making 116 HP (the same) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque (10 Nm more than the old model). Fuel consumption is rated between 3.8 and 3.4 l/100 km (74.3 mpg imp - 83.1 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions at 101-89 g/km. The non-EfficientDynamics 116d has the same specs but returns 4.1 - 3.7 l/100 km (68.9-76.4 mpg imp).

- 118d and 118d xDrive models come with the brand new B47 4-cylinder 2-liter diesel engine that can also be found on the 518d and X3 xDrive18d alternatives, making 150 HP and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, 7 HP extra and the same amount of torque. Average fuel consumption: 4.3 – 4.0 litres (4.2 –3.8 litres)/100 kilometres [65.7 – 70.6 (67.3 – 74.3) mpg imp] depending on the gearbox. For the xDrive model the numbers are higher by 0.3 l/100 km on average. CO2 emissions: 114 – 104 g/km (110 – 99 g/km), exhaust standard: EU6.

- 120d and 120d xDrive models use the same engine but taken up to 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque which is 6 HP more than on the old versions. Average fuel consumption: 4.7 – 4.3 liters/100 kilometers (60.1 – 65.7 mpg imp), CO2 emissions: 124 – 113 g/km, exhaust standard: EU6. For the RWD version, those numbers go down by 0.2 l/100 km on average. The xDrive model is only available with an automatic.

- 125d comes with the same twin-turbo 4-cylinder 2-liter diesel as before but the power output was taken up to 224 HP (6 more) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. Average fuel consumption: 4.6 – 4.3 liters/100 kilometers (61.4 – 65.7 mpg imp),CO2 emissions: 121 – 114 g/km, exhaust standard: EU6. It’s only available with an 8-speed auto.

New 8-speed transmission guided by the navigation system

As promised a while ago, BMW also introduced a new navigation system that uses telemetry data to tell the automatic gearbox when a hill or curve is coming. In consequence, the car knows what gear to prepare beforehand in order to reduce fuel consumption accordingly.

While we were expecting this sort of technology to make its debut on the new G11 7 Series, it seems like BMW was in a rush and is now offering it on facelifted 1 Series for the first time. On top of that, the 6-speed manual gearbox now also has a rev-matching feature.
