With 2013 rapidly coming to an end, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its annual list of vehicles that have earned its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards.
39 cars met the Institute’s new, tougher safety criteria, which included the small overlap front crash for the Top Safety Pick+ award. Although not mandatory for 2013, the new crash test’s score will count in the overall rating beginning next year.
Speaking of the Top Safety Pick+ award, 22 vehicles earned the Institute’s highest accolade by receiving “Good” or “Acceptable” scores in the small overlap crash tests.
"We've made it more difficult for manufacturers this year," said IIHS President Adrian Lund. "Following a gradual phase-in, the small overlap crash is now part of our basic battery of tests, and good or acceptable performance should be part of every vehicle's safety credentials. We also felt it was time to offer extra recognition to manufacturers that are offering a proven crash avoidance technology."
More details are available in the official press release below. The full list of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ vehicles is available in our photo gallery section.
