Mixed feelings for the top 6 MotoGP riders who took parts in the inaugural press conference at the Losail Circuit in Qatar, and yes, it’s about the recent regulations changes enforced by Dorna.
The press conference had Yamaha contracted riders Lorenzo and Rossi at the same table with their arch-rivals from Honda, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez, all 4 of them flanked by Forward Yamaha’s Aleix Espargaro and Ducati’s new star Cal Crutchlow.
As the first questions were unsurprisingly related to Marquez’ health, the young Honda rider replied that he is feeling better but will still have to be very careful on this inaugural race. 9-tiem world champion Rossi agreed as he added that even though he dreams of a podium in Qatar, his main concern is to avoid crashing. Rossi had three surgeries over the winter and plans to stay healthy as much as possible.
Naturally, the big question was not delayed too much, and all the riders spoke about the way they see the latest regulation changes for the current season. Obviously, despite the intended “freedom of speech” aura, the carefully-arranged ideas behind each rider’s answer could be easily traced to some team pep-talk. While everybody tried to be polite and said they’re racing for the fans and the generic direction is a good one, pretty much all the riders admitted more or less openly that the grid is a bit chaotic right now. And what was even funnier, was seeing some of the, unable to clearly understand the big picture.
Straightforward as always, Cal Crutchlow seemed to provide the most sincere answer. ”I think the rules are fine, I think Dorna is doing a good job to, uhmm, to help us, “the Isle of Man-native replied.
With only 2 hours ahead of the Free Practice 1 of the Qatar round at the time of writing, it will not be long until we get to see the real face of the 2014 season: proper track action.
