The all-new sixth generation Mercedes Benz SL enjoyed its motor show debut today at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. While the SL, which means Sport and Light, has failed to live up to this designation, the current generation makes up for this with an almost all-aluminum chassis that is 275 lbs lighter than the existing generation.
Right now, only two engine options have been announced, a 3.5-liter V6 for the SL 350, rated at 306 hp and 370 Nm of torque. It uses just 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) 0.3 seconds faster than its predecessor.
On the other hand, the bigger SL 500 uses twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 which is much more impressive than its predecessor. The 435 hp (429 hp in US spec) this produces makes it 12% more powerful than the old R230 version of the 500.
