2013 Dakar: Cyril Despres Takes the Lead, Husqvarna Gets Podium

Cyril Despres takes the lead after Stage 3 1 photo
It’s an early statement for 2013 Dakar favorite Cyril Despres. After yesterday’s 2nd stage with Despres making a costly navigation error and missing the front pack, the 3rd stage brings him a podium. He came third but with enough advantage to make it to the overall 1st position.
Starting 20 minutes after Barreda and Pedrero, Despres managed to get in the leading position by km 190, and this means some serious riding, making it from position 12 to 1. Stage 3 winner is Francisco Lopez riding for KTM, with second place occupied by Husqvarna rider Paulo Goncalves.

While Despres’ comeback in this third 2013 Dakar stage was something everyone was expecting given his expertise in rough cross-country riding, we cannot help noticing Husqvarna/ Speedbrain’s exceptional start. However, Joan Barreda came up on the 44th position, and at the time of writing there’s no official info on what caused such a gap.

Despres' team mate Kurt Caselli finished Stage 3 in position 30 and is on the 19th place in the overall ranking now, while Honda’s Helder Rodrigues is still 28th overall, with position 30 after this stage. So far, here are the Stage 3 and Overall rankings:

Stage 3:
  1. Lopez (CHL) – KTM
  2. Goncalves (PRT) – Husqvarna 00:01:18
  3. Despre (FRA) – KTM 00:04:08

Overall:
  1. Despres (FRA) –KTM
  2. Lopez (CHL)- KTM 00:02:51
  3. Ullevalseter (NOR) – KTM 00:04:59.
