Being already in the final years of production, the F01 7 Series, that entered production in 2008 is still battling newer products from the competition like the A8 and S-Class.
Car and Driver wanted to test the new entry-level model, the 740i, that arrived with the facelift that the 7er received in 2012. However, they did go for the xDrive version, since that can prove to be useful during snowy winters.

Powered by the incredible 3-liter N55 engine in an upgraded version that develops 320 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, you might think that the 740Li xDrive is a bit slow. However, it manages to pull 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, comparable time with a Cadillac ATS 3.6 and Camaro RS that pretend to be sport cars.

Probably the best thing about this car is that it keeps the hydraulic steering, a fact that will probably make any big businessman enjoy driving it just as much as sitting in the back.

Talking about driving characteristics, brakes should also be mentioned and in a good way, as they are precise and efficient for a 2 tone car. Driving it around town might be a bit of a hustle, since it is pretty big, but the steering feel lets you know exactly where the wheels are, easing your experience.

Overall, the 740Li xDrive is the 'rationalized' flagship from BMW. It's the perfect combination of luxury and efficiency and (depending on how much you're willing to spend on optional features) maybe even price.
