General Motors has issued a recall for more than 38,000 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Buick LaCrosse and Buick Regal models equipped with eAssist and sold in the United States, over a generator control module that may not function properly.
According to GM, a malfunctioning generator control module could cause a gradual loss of battery charge and, if visual dashboard warnings are ignored, the engine may stall. Furthermore, there may be a burning/melting odor, followed by smoke, and even fire in the trunk.
The automaker claims that the problem does not involve the eAssist battery and says only one trunk fire, with no injuries or crashes, has been reported so far. "GM is aware of generator control board incidents, most of which have occurred within first 1,000 miles of operation," the company added.
A total of 38,197 vehicles built for the 2012 and 2013 model-year have been recalled, but examples assembled after December 2012 are not affected.
