2011 iF Product Design Award for the BMW 5 Series

It's been a hit when it was presented, and that still shows. German manufacturer BMW has presented a year ago a new generation of the 5 Series, which is still turning heads and winning accolades.

In October, the 5 Series received the 2011 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. Now, less than two months later, the same line of cars was awarded the 2011 iF Product Design Award, a prize which for the carmaker spells “internationally recognized seal of approval.”

This year, 2,756 products from various industries were submitted by 1,121 participants originating from 43 countries. The governing body of the awards only chose 50 of them as being the best of the best in their categories. The 5 Series got this distinction in the Transportation Design category.

“The design of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan skilfully translates the car’s attributes into an authentic formal language,”
BMW motivated the decision of the iF Awards jurors.

“The sheer presence and elegance of its design express the Sedan’s premium quality and outstanding ride comfort, while its sporty driving characteristics are reflected in dynamic bodywork lines and the overall evocation of a distinctly athletic car.”

The new 5 Series was launched in November last year, equipped with several exciting engines: 550i (407 hp), 535i (306 hp), 528i (258 hp), 523i (204 hp), 520d (184 hp), 530d (245 hp) and 525d (204hp).

All the models feature daytime running lights, foglamps, two-stage Adaptive Brake Lights and cruise control complete with a brake initiation function. Optionally, customers can go for bi-xenon dual headlights, Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution, adaptive headlight range control and bending lights, as well as an Enhanced Emergency Call function for ConnectedDrive.
