1956 Austin-Healey Factory 100M Hits the Auction Block

The forthcoming RM Auctions sale at Amelia Island (March 12) will feature one of only 640 original factory-built Austin-Healey 100M roadsters. The vehicle in question, estimated at $125,000-$150,000, also happens to be one of the 165 verified factory-built 100M cars in the 100M Registry.

The factory 100M “Le Mans” modifications increased engine performance to 110 bhp, from the standard 90 bhp, by installing a “high lift” camshaft and high compression pistons. Handling was improved with a larger sway bar and stiffer suspension.

The car that is set to go under the hammer next month has been fully restored, and comes as a left hand drive, two-seat roadster, built in 1956 and exported to the United States. It was then purchased by the previous owner who drove it in the ’60s and then stored it for 30 years before undertaking an $85,000 frame-off restoration that was completed in 2002.

The car comes fitted with a 110 bhp, 2,660 cc inline four-cylinder engine, twin SU carburetors, four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, independent front with rear semi-elliptic leaf springs and four-wheel hydraulic brakes.

Other highlights include a tool kit, tonneau cover, side curtains, heater, laminated windscreen and regulation leather strap over the louvered bonnet.

The car has been repainted in Old English White, while the interior was redone in blue leather with Old English White piping and blue Wilton wool carpeting. The restoration was documented with photos and receipts that accompany the car.

“The current owner recently undertook an additional $20,000 restoration by highly-respected Austin-Healey 100M specialist BMC Classics, readying the car for driving and competitive showings. Well documented and beautifully presented, this is a terrific opportunity for Healey enthusiasts,”
a company statement from RM Auctions reads.
