The folks who are into drag racing are used to seeing contraptions that pack ten times their original power, but today we’re here to show you a machine that takes going to the mechanical gym to a whole new level.
The Chevrolet Chevette you’ll be able to see in the footage below has forgotten about the 85 hp delivered by its factory motor. When its compact engine compartment now houses no less than 1,500 hp (an approximate number, not a dyno figure), it’s not difficult to understand why the little Chevy lost its muscle memory.
All that power comes from a 555 ci V8, which works with a pair of 82-mm turbos. This combination sounds explosive because... well... it is explosive.
Still, despite the compact dimensions, the Chevette is not as light as you might think, being an example of the dark side of GM engineering. This particular car still has plenty of stuff in common with the original vehicle, which means it tips the scales at 2,850 lbs (1,290 kg).
The Chevrolet we have here is part of the latter category, with the contraption having recently taken part in the Drag Week. This is a competition that sees participants driving from one track to another under their own power, which is exactly what the Chevette did, albeit with a set of amusingly offroad-ready rear tires.
As for the kind of stunts the machine can pull when using drag radials, you can learn all about that in the footage below. The wheelie bar is obviously mandatory.

The best part about this Chevette? It can be driven on the street
It’s not all that difficult to come up with an extreme machine that’s confined to the drag strip, but when we’re talking about cars that also spend time on the street, things become a bit more complicated. The Chevrolet we have here is part of the latter category, with the contraption having recently taken part in the Drag Week.
