When you hit the drag strip, your voice will begin to be heard starting from 500 hp or so, while the big boys find 1,000+ hp racecars amusing. But what happens when you have 10,000 horses pushing your purpose-built machine down the strip?
When you hit the drag strip, you voice will begin to be heard starting from 500 hp or so, while the big boys find 1,000+ hp racecars amusing. But what happens when you have 10,000 horses pushing your purpose-built machine down the strip?

That's what you can call the mother of all drag racing or, in official terms, Top Fuel Drag Racing. We're here to bring you a sample of that, which comes from a run Shawn Langdon of Don Schumacher Racing completed on Sunday.

Having hit the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, the racer didn't exactly get to enjoy the Arizona sun. That's one of the drawbacks of pulling a 3.77s run at 316 mph.

Another downside of such a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sprint is the fact that the recording equipment that's supposed to provide our entertainment is barely able to keep up with what goes on, and it doesn't matter if we're talking about the camera or the microphone.

In fact, you'll be able to notice that in the video below. Now, before you move on to hitting the "play" button, there are a few things we should mention about Top Fuel sprinting.

These dragsters are the quickest accelerating vehicles in the world. Unfortunately, we can't compare their drag strip runs to those of the cars that adorn our driveways. At least not anymore.

Back in 2008, Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta had a fatal crash, with the National Hot Rod Association deciding to shorten the length of the Top Fuel runs as a result of that. While we all enjoy 1,320-foot (402-meter) runs, Top Fuel drivers now have to go for 1,000 foot (305 m) sprints. And no, the one you'll see below is not a world record.

In fact, it's not even Shawn Langdon's record. The kind of run that deserves that label took place last year, with the driver managing to pull a 3.662-second run.
