Speed Camera Lottery: Greatest Invention Ever

Any of you remember Thefuntheory? No, it's not something we've learned in school, but rather a more extra-curricular approach to, well, life and great ideas. An endeavor supported by Volkswagen and advertising agency DBB to show the world that you can have fun while coming up with great solutions to just about everything.

And what a great idea this one is! We mean really, if applied, it might completely change the way in which traffic looks and feels on public roads. Hell, it might even make those British motorists fall in love with the speed cameras they otherwise would like to see go up in flames.

Volkswagen and DBB set up a competition a while back for all those willing to come up with a fun, useful solution to one of the daily problems cities are faced with. The winner of that competition is Kevin Richardson, an American which came up with the Speed Camera Lottery.

His idea calls for a speed camera to do what it normally does: take photos and issue tickets to those drivers not abiding by the law. The difference is that this camera also takes pictures of the people who don't brake the speed limit.

Instead of speeding tickets, those playing by the rules would receive... lottery tickets. And, above all, a chance at winning the money collected from those who were fined.

Did the experiment work? Well, in the three days the camera was up and running in Stockholm, Sweden, 24,857 cars passed by. Before the camera was placed there, the average speed in the region was 32 km/h (20 mph). After the camera became functional, the speed dropped to 25 km/h (15 mph).
