Jersey City Will Not Welcome F1 Race

Formula One's plans to include Jersey City into its calendar in the upcoming few years suffered a major blow on Wednesday, when it emerged that mayor Jerramiah Healy doesn't support such a project for the future.

Earlier this week, it has surfaced in the media that Bernie Ecclestone's FOM has contacted the representatives of Jersey City for hosting a potential US GP starting from 2013. The plans, which included the building of a 3.6-mile track within the perimeter of the Liberty State Park, were leaked to the media by the local campaigners Friends of Liberty State Park.

It was also revealed that the Formula One representatives were pursuing a 5-year contract with Jersey City. However, amid some intense pressure from the environmentalist groups in Jersey, Healy issued a statement on Wednesday in which he warns the city's Tourism Office to scrap plans for such a project.

After a review of the draft proposal prepared by the City's Tourism Office, I have come to the same conclusion...that this type of event is not suited for Liberty State Park,” red his statement, according to the local media.

While we work to attract national and international events to our city, we must ensure that they are appropriate and will have the least impact upon the quality of life of our residents and our community.

Obviously, this state of events pleased the guys at Friends of Liberty State Park, whose president Sam Pesin admitted having talked to mayor Healy about this issue earlier this week.

Mayor Healy did reach out to me yesterday and we had a very constructive conversation. Instead of a negative wasteful controversy, we can all focus on working together on positive efforts to benefit Jersey City and Liberty State Park,” said Pesin.
