GM to Offer Semi-Autonomous Vehicles by 2020
Unlike Nissan's Autonomous Drive, the Super Cruise doesn't allow to car to drive itself, but takes control only in certain highway circumstances. In short, it uses cameras to keep the car between the lines and a radar to keep a safe distance from the vehicles ahead.
The Super Cruise was already tested on a Cadillac SRX SUV last year, but Charles Green, an engineer who studies driver performance with the systems, says it will be showcased in its later versions.
"Super Cruise will be designed in a way to help you keep your visual attention on the road ahead," Green told USA Today. "The 'how' is something that will become more apparent as we show Super Cruise in its later versions."
Earlier this month, Nissan said it will offer a production self-driving automobile by 2020.
