Our trusty spy photographers just came back with a fresh batch of photos of a new, upcoming model from BMW. Yes, we're talking about the third model in the 2 Series range, the Convertible.
At the moment, there are only two models in the 2 Series range but they hardly have anything to do with eachother. The first one was the Coupe that is basically using F20 1 Series underpinnings while the second addition was the Active Tourer that is using the UKL plaftorm, also being the first front-wheel drive model the Germans ever put in production.
The Convertible is expected to make a debut later this year in production clothes. Stylistically there won't be any changes. The front fascia and the rear panel will remain the same, even though they are visibly camouflaged in the spy photos posted below.
The only change will be the soft drop top that will hide neatly in the boot. Yes, the 2 Series will have a soft top, just like its bigger brother, the 6 Series.
We're also expecting to have plenty of room in the back, especially with the roof down. That's because we were already comfortable enough in the Coupe when we tested it, excepting maybe some headroom. With no more roof in place that shouldn't be a problem any more.
As for the engines, the same line-up will be used, with 2-liter petrol and diesel engines (excepting the US, of course that will keep going without diesels) and the ubiquotuous 3-liter plant on the M235i (yes, the convertible will also get one of those). Coupled with xDrive and maybe a limited-slip differential, the 2 Series Convertible could redefine summertime fun if it comes at a decent price. If the Coupe is any reference point, we're looking at a big seller.
