Given that every single race in the port city so far has been surrounded either by boredom issues, or by “manipulative” claims by some of the contestants, that being added to the recent doubts about the long-term future of the race, Bernie Ecclestone seems to have already orientated towards some other exotic locations for the event.
However, Spain will not lose its second race in the series, as the latest rumors regarding the future of the European GP are linked with the city of Mallorca. According to British website Autosport, some representatives of the aforementioned city were actually present in Valencia last weekend to discuss the preliminary details of a potential F1 race there in the future.
Joan Jaume Mulet, the mayor of the Llucmajor municipality of the Balearic Islands reportedly commissioned Spanish architects Mateo Palmer and Biel Arbona to already start working on a brand new 3.6-mile track due to be called “Circuit of the Balearic Islands” and expected to be finalized by 2013. It seems the team that wants to convince Ecclestone to bring F1 to Mallorca includes Federico Gastaldi, the man who brought the sport to Argentina back in the mid-1990s.
We're not sure whether Ecclestone agreed to the project or not but, considering his recent comments that he aims for a 25-race series in the upcoming few years – races in India, US and Russia are included in this project – we'd be inclined to think he's pretty much evaluating his options right now.
