VOLKSWAGEN XL1 2013 - Present
"The XL1 is the most fuel-efficient production car in the world," Volkswagen proudly announced from its Wolfsburg factory, releasing complete technical details for the hybrid.
The extraordinary XL1 takes its power from a 47 HP two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine combined with an electric motor producing 27 HP thanks to a 5.5 kWh battery pack. Thus fuel consumption is of only 261 mpg (0.9 liters / 100 km), and CO2 emissions are rated at 21 g / km (the Audi A3 e-tron will have 35 g / km).
Moreover, the German carmaker brags with a drag coefficient of 0.189 and a carbon fiber body that has a total weight of 1,752 lbs (795 kg). Performance figures are not outstanding of course, but the XL1 can hit an electronically limited top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h), while the 0-62 time is a little less encouraging with 12.7 seconds. The 3.8 meters long car car travel 31 miles (50 km) on electricity alone, but the range can get up to 310 miles (499 km) with a full tank of gas.
