If the Dodge Grand Caravan is familiar with you, the Volkswagen Routan was very similar. However, the Routan was based on the Chrysler Minivan and shared many of its mechanicals.

The exterior design however was completely different, with specific Volkswagen grille and completely new front and rear fascias, making the Routan look more like a premium vehicle.

A microbus of a modern era, the Routan offered both comfort and power, however, it still drove like a minivan, even if the vehicle had a firmer suspension and tighter steering.

The interior was different from the Minivan’s with different doors panels, a new carpet and a redesigned dashboard.

The Routan could accommodate up to 7 passengers, with the 3rd row seats designed for children. The rear seats folded flat in case of longer items needed to be carried in the trunk.

The SE and the SEL trim levels offered power sliding doors, steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls and a tri-zone climate control.

Exclusively offered with the SEL, the Routan could be equipped with power adjustable pedals, front and 2nd row heated seats, a power lift gate and automatic climate control.

Other standard features included full power accessories, cruise control and a 6-speaker audio system with an auxiliary jack.

Safety wise, the Routan was equipped with electronic stability and traction control, antilock brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system.
