The Flying Spur's soundtrack reminds us of the
Mercedes S63 AMG and perhaps would have made us happy if Bentley had provided an optional sports exhaust. Unfortunately, this treat remains reserved to the Continental GT models.
Since we mentioned the S-Class, we have to explain that it is the S65
AMG that comes closer to the Flying Spur. The Merc laughs in the Bentley’s face when it comes to technology, but all the tech gimmicks in the world couldn’t convince us to choose it over the Bentley. Crewe’s proposal simply looks and feels more lavish. Oh and if we must offer an alternative from the world of more reasonable automobiles, we would select the
Audi A8.
Bentley may talk hides and veneers, but the Flying Spur is more like a precious stone - its shine depends on the light you cast upon it. Compared to the Continental GT, we would’ve expected more updates. You know, the little things that can sometime make a difference. Its outdated center infotainment display is an example as good as any.
On the other hand, the car distances itself from the pre-revamp
Continental Flying Spur. The old one was perhaps a bit too biased towards the performance part of the Bentley emblem. With the 2014 Flying Spur, the automaker has tipped the scales towards comfort. Alas, Bentley has gone a tad too far, placing a few calibration dents in the car’s perceived performance aura. We shall nominate this as the worst part of the vehicle.
As for the best side of the Bentley Flying Spur, it is the sedan’s character that takes the title. The overall experience, to be more precise. This thing knows how to get under your skin, gifting you with a sort of active luxury lifestyle.
This all obviously comes with a financial burden, as the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur has a starting price of US$ 200,500, plus tax and delivery fees. We obviously have to consider at least an extra US$ 15,000 in terms of options. In Europe, Bentley’s Flying Spur starts at EUR 212,000, including 20 percent VAT.
A truly tempting proposal this Flying Spur. Nonetheless, it is time for Bentley to stop resting on its traditional laurels and come up with something entirely fresh.
