In late 2022, Opel unveiled the electric version of the Astra's sixth generation, in both shapes as a compact hatchback or a station wagon, traditionally named Sports Tourer.

After Peugeot-Citroen bought the German automaker from GM, it shared the platforms among the brands. Thus, Opel received the EMP2 base used for the Peugeot 308 and built the Astra on it starting in 2021. Later on, in 2022, it unveiled an all-electric version of its famous vehicle on the European market in the form of the Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric, respectively.

One of the things that the new owner didn't want to change was the brand identity, and that was clearly viewed on the Astra's front fascia. Thus, the so-called "Opel Visor" was carried over from the already-launched Opel Mokka. Unlike its IAC-powered brother, the Electric version didn't sport the same air inlets at the front since it didn't need them. Like its 5-door sibling, the Sports Tourer shared most of its body panels with the rest of the Astra's range. Yet, the rear bumper was slightly different, with a narrower diffuser underneath the rear bumper.

Inside, the carmaker installed a fully digital Pure Panel with two large 10-inch widescreen displays. The dashboard's minimalist design and the center console's clean lines were part of Opel's design philosophy. The 2023 Astra Sports Tourer Electric didn't lose any of its cargo capabilities since the battery pack was mounted underneath the floor. Thus, it could provide 516 liters (18.2 cu-ft) of space with the rear bench up or 1,553 liters (54.8 cu-ft) with the backseats folded down.

Opel introduced the sixth generation of the Astra in 2021, but, unlike its predecessors, it wasn't allied with GM anymore. Yet, it offered the car in a shape that made it desirable by many: as a station wagon.

After Peugeot-Citroen bought the Opel/Vauxhall duet, it started to fix things in the financial department. Moreover, it considered that it has to use a common platform for all three European brands. But what it did clearly understand its new owner was that it had to leave the brand's image on the car. So it couldn't just replace the badge and the nameplate.

Thus, the vehicle introduced the Opel Vizor-themed front fascia carried over from its crossover sibling, the Mokka. Its bumper sported a wide grille flanked by side scoops where the carmaker installed the fog lamps. Its profile showed a longer bodywork by 10.6" (27 cm) than the five-door version. A longer roofline was required to cover the trunk area, while the rear tailgate was not as raked-forward as the hatchback version. That added length was not made entirely by the rear overhang but also by increasing the wheelbase.

Inside, the cabin was very similar to the hatchback version, with a digital cockpit and an option for a fully-glazed, three-parts dash panel that surrounded the driver. Following the same minimalist design concept of the carmaker, the design team created clear lines on the center console. Unlike its other European siblings, the Astra installed a pair of AGR-approved seats with zero-gravity rankings. For the rear side of the cabin, though, Opel rearranged the split-folding bench and increased the trunk volume up to 1,634 liters (57 cu-ft) without any seat up.

The station wagon with the best Cx in the world, as Opel claims, it is nothing more then an extended version of the Opel Astra hatchback. There are a lot of good news about this. First of all, it means that you can always take the Sports Tourer and pretend it is a regular hatchback, but with a bigger trunk. How much bigger? Well, the Sports Tourer has 540 liters (19 cu-ft) with all the seats up, but will triple its volume if the rear seats are folded down, reaching a small utility van storage room with its 1630 liters (57.5 cu-ft) available.

The engine lineup available comprises a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with 75 hp and goes up to a 1.6-liter turbocharged direct-injected gasoline engine with 200 hp.

For the diesel powerplants, the Astra Sports Tourer also features 1.5-liter engines with 110hp and 122 hp. Both are coupled with manual transmissions.

The Astra Sports Tourer introduces InteliLux LED matrix lights for the headlights, a novelty for its segment.

Inside, there is room for five with more headroom for the rear passengers than in the Astra hatchback. A comfortable ride is ensured by the same Watt's linkage rear suspension. For the driver, the most important elements are the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system ,which can do screen mirroring and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Astra Sports Tourer is one of the most iconic vehicles in the Opel range. Whether it was known as the Caravan or, more recently, the Sports Tourer, it is still the classic station wagon for half of Europe and the UK.

The hardest job for Opel was to build a car with almost the same length of the outgoing generation, but bigger inside. After certain modifications, the Astra Sports Tourer gained a lot of trunk space, reaching a total of 1630 liters (57.3 cu-ft) with the rear seats folded down. With all the seats in the upright position, the trunk space is a decent 540 liters (19 cu-ft).

A very important modification is for the rear occupants, where they gained 28 mm (1.1 in) in legroom and 26 mm (1 in) in headroom. One of the biggest achievements for the bodywork was to cut down the weight. By working on new components, new materials and also new engines, Opel succeeded to reduce the model's weight compared to the generation it replaces with 150 kg (330 lbs).

The base engine is a turbocharged gasoline 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 105 hp. It can be coupled with an Easytronic transmission for best fuel consumption results and get a combined 4.2 liter/100 km (56 mpg). The most powerful unit offered is a gasoline 1.6-liter direct-injected, which develops 200 hp.

For the diesel units, Opel offers a brand new 1.6-liter bi-turbo engine, which has the same characteristics as an older 2.0 turbodiesel powerplant, offering 160 hp and 350 Nm.

Opel launched the fifth generation of the Astra at the 2009 Frankfurt International Auto Show. Still, the station wagon version of its successful compact contender saw the light of day one year later, at the Paris Motor Show.

General Motors' European branch was not in good shape, shaken after the world financial crisis that almost killed it. Yet, the carmaker moved on and introduced a new generation for its compact-segment lineup, which sold it in various shapes. For the station wagon, it chose the name Sports Tourer to emphasize the vehicle's sporty character.

The styling was inspired by the Insignia, with curved headlights on their lower part. Its large and narrow grille was accompanied by a second one in the lower bumper. Both did the same job of cooling the engine and the AC compressor. The long roof version of the Astra family featured a more extended glass panel behind the rear doors than its five-door hatchback sibling. Moreover, the tailgate was also slightly raked-forward. Finally, a small lip adorned the rear part of the roof, improving the aerodynamic coefficient.

Inside the cabin, the dashboard looked high-tech for the time it came on the market. It featured four round dials on the instrument cluster, with the engine temperature and fuel level in the upper-middle sector. Between the large speedometer and tachometer, there was an LCD screen. The rear bench featured a split-folding system that expanded the trunk to 1,550 liters (54.7 cu. ft.).

Under the hood, the carmaker added a new Euro5 emission standards engine range, fit for all tastes. Moreover, it built the vehicle with six-speed automatic transmissions for specific powerplants.
