After it managed to turn the world upside down by becoming a successful car sharing company and inspiring manufacturers like Daimler and BMW to set up their own similar services, Zipcar announced this week another move that would surely appeal to the most active of its customers.
With the sunny days just around the corner, Zipcar plans to tap into the need for exercise and open-air fun of its customer by adding a touch of zero emissions motoring to its vehicles. Not a new electric power train, of course, but a bicycle rack.
Zipcar will offer Yakima bicycle racks on Ford Escape vehicles located in Manhattan and Brooklyn, after it managed to become the car sharing partner and sponsor of upcoming Bike New York tours. As if that wasn't enough to get the business going, Zipcar also partnered with Empire Passports that can be used at more than 50 New York State Parks.
"Zipcar is constantly working to give our members greater access to their local resources," said Charlie Irons, general manager, Zipcar New York.
"Our programs with Yakima, the New York State Parks and Bike New York will give Zipsters more opportunities to engage in the active lifestyles they love by allowing them to take advantage of the surrounding state parks and utilizing their bicycles more, while also living a green and sustainable lifestyle."
The car sharing business is promising to become one of the bright ideas of automotive industry. Aside for the obvious advantages over regular rentals and the ownership of a vehicle, a car sharing service will also help diminish congestion and cut the CO2 that would have otherwise be released by tens of cars.
