Zipcar Ends Low Car Diet No. 3

Kicked off in September this year, the Zipcar low car diet, a program set in motion to convince as many people as possible to give up their cars for a month. Instead they can use whatever means of transportation they can think of, with most of the people taking part going for, of course, bikes.

This was the third edition of the Zipcar program and, as it happened with the previous ones, it proved to be a success. 262 participants in 12 cities across the United States and Canada took part in this year's event.

By giving up their cars for a month, the participants walked more than 5,400 miles, made 1,667 trips by bike and took 4,169 trips on public transit. Some exceptions from using a car were allowed, but only if the participants used the Zipcar sharing service. 354 rides were made in Zipcar vehicles.

According to the numbers provided by Zipcar, participants increased their miles biked by 80 percent, decreased their miles driven by 69 percent and lost a total of 247 pounds. There are no figures to show how much the carbon footprint of the participants was reduced.

"As we've seen the annual Low-Car Diet grow, Zipcar has been able to demonstrate how easy it is to benefit our own health and the environment by utilizing a mix of alternative transportation options," said Scott Griffith, Zipcar CEO.

"We continue to see participants truly embrace this lifestyle beyond the 30-day program. They are seeing that the car-sharing model is a viable alternative to ownership, by demonstrating the freedom of having access to a car when needed, without the expensive cost that comes with it."
