Zero-Skills Rider Mauls Bike at 30 MPH

One of the funny things (or are they) about motorcycling is that you don't necessarily have to travel at high speed to wreck your bike in a very bad way. The video after the jump is the perfect way to show how extensive the damage can be even when crashing at 30 mph (48 km/h).

In certain scenarios, this speed may seem inappropriate but this is definitely not the case. In fact, a rider with decent skills would have gone around the bend at an even higher speed without any sorts of problems.

Target fixation and poor riding skills are always a bad recipe

Even though the rider claims that the cause of the crash is excessive speed, any seasoned motorcyclist would most likely contradict him. The cause of the crash is the improper use of the clutch and throttle and target fixation, combined with plain hesitation and newbie reactions.

Riding in a turn with good mastering of the throttle makes using the clutch unnecessary and thus does not reduce the maneuverability of the bike. If changes in the course become necessary, riding with the clutch half-pulled makes every reaction of the bike slower and imprecise.

On the other hand, learning how to combine bike leaning angle, the position in the lane, and the throttle eliminates most of the need to alter the bike's trajectory in mid-turn. Putting things simply, it enters the curve at the right speed, in the right position, with the rider correctly positioned for the entire length of the bend.

In a way, all this talk reminded me about what an older rider once told me when I was a noob myself. "Riding a motorcycle, he said, is all about learning how to ride through the turns..." Guess he was right.
