Zero S Owner Rides 3500 Miles

It looks like things are about to get serious for the electric bikes in the not-so-distant future, with all the technological advances, better engines, smarter batteries and faster charging. Zero S owner Terry Hershner wanted to prove that an electric motorcycle can really go the distance and be used for more than cross-town riding, so he went on a 3500 mile (5630 km) trip.

Due to the rather limited range a full charge can offer, electric bikes are mostly used within the confinements of the city. However, Terry's trip proved that there is a lot of hope for the EVs. With an 1000 mile (1609 km) ride in his home state Florida, Terry Hershner went west to Texas, for another 2500 miles (4022 km), luggage and all, proving that a bike like the Zero S can indeed be used for touring.

Now, we should admit that Terry Hershner made some modifications on his bike, adding no less than three Delta Q QuiQ chargers, two Elcon PFC 2500 chargers and a J1772 car charging port, allowing him to charge pretty much anywhere and reducing the 8 hours time to merely an hour.

Hershner covered around 500 miles (800 km) a day and had a rather funny riding schedule: 45 minutes on the bike, 45 minutes for charging. It may seem a bit weird, but such a riding rhythm also contributes to a more relaxed trip. Those who use to ride for 10 hours or more and stop only for the sandwiches/ refuelling/ restroom combo know what we're talking about.

After this journey Terry Hershner adds that he saw for himself the way the charging infrastructure has developed during the last years, but stresses there is still more to accomplish in this direction.
