A few hours ago, Chevrolet pulled the wraps off the new Corvette. The eighth generation of the car, presented in Stingray guise, is said to be the most powerful entry-level Corvette, and the one with the fastest acceleration time. But that's only so when the car is equipped with the Z51 Performance Package.
As with all other Vettes, this one too can be upgraded with a series of packages. For now, only the Z51 has been detailed by the carmaker, with all the following ones being scheduled for unveiling later this year.
The first mid-engined Corvette is powered by a new 6.2-liter small-block V8 unit that works in combination with Chevy's first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. With this hardware on, and with the help of the Z51 Performance Package, the new Corvette reaches 60 mph in under three seconds, the fastest for any entry Vette.
Z51 brings to the mix a series of performance tweaks meant to transform the car in the monster that it is.
For improved aerodynamics, there are the front splitter and two-piece rear spoiler that generate 400 pounds of downforce. For braking, the Z51 adds larger brake rotors (with Z51 logos on the Brembo calipers) and front brake cooling inlets. Puttin the power to the road for this version of the Stingray are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.
Add to all of the above the Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 and Performance Traction Management system and you get a car that feels just right on the road and delivers the expected performance.
The new Corvette will enter production later this year and it will sell starting at under $60,000, just like the current generation. Fitting the Z51 on the car, or any other package for that matter, will of course increase that amount significantly
Full details on the available packages for the new Corvette will be announced at a later date.
