The G 63 is arguably the poshest off-road SUV that money can buy these days. Even the previous generation, which is featured in the following video, is very comfortable for daily driving and an extremely competent partner off the beaten path. Be that as it may, the high ground clearance and center of gravity can translate into a rollover in certain scenarios.
After going in too hot and slamming the brakes too late, Dave Coulter of Daily Driven Exotics came very close to a rollover in his silver-painted G 63. A wire fence was strong enough to keep the Mercedes out of harm’s way, but nevertheless, a bit of damage was done to the front bumper and paint.
The body-on-frame utility vehicle also struck a really sturdy pole, and half of that pole has somehow jammed into the undercarriage without penetrating the frame. A little more damage was done to the roof and a small piece of trim when Dave got the G 63 out of the fence, but nevertheless, the twin-turbo leviathan drove away from the crash scene under its own steam.
At the end of the day, we should be glad that nobody was hurt and the G-Class has survived this close encounter. Cars are replaceable, even high-end AMGs like this fellow here, but broken bones are a different affair altogether.
The G 63 also happens to be pretty safe thanks to world-class engineering and Mercedes’ obsession for electronic nannies. Lest we forget, the Three-Pointed Star is the automaker responsible for introducing the passenger safety cell, anti-lock braking system, and the electronic stability program.
At the present moment, the most affordable G-Class you can buy from the dealer is the G 550 that retails from $131,750 before destination charge. The AMG is a little more expensive at $156,450, and unsurprisingly, all the safety tech comes standard on the 550 and the performance-oriented model.
