Many sedans built in the 1990s are now rotting away in junkyards, long forgotten by the car-loving public. It's a general problem of all things from that era, which are old but not old enough so you'd put them in a Wonder Woman retro movie. But that's not the case with the W140, the codename of one of the best Mercedes-Benz flagship ever.
Well, there's no W140 in WW1984, but you get what we're talking about. The phrase "they don't make them like they used to" is over-used. So instead, we'll remind you that back in those days, only a few carmakers could truly produce a luxury vehicle, and flagships were much more celebrated.

There's nothing wrong with the way Mercedes does business today. It's just that the $40,000 obtainable models make the badge slightly less desirable. Also, the engineering of something like an old S600 felt more like a civilian spaceship, whereas a modern CLA 250 is a stepped-up Jetta.

The YouTube car renderer Marouane Bembli, a.k.a. TheSketchMonkey, is a fan of unloved cars, some of which famously made his channel grow. So a 1990s Mercedes fits right in, especially when we're talking about the high-end S600 version of this S-Class.

To create his modernized Photoshop masterpiece, he took inspiration not from the current model that just came out but from the W222. The outgoing model was widely celebrated when it came out, and it seems car designers value its distinctive features. So, you'll get hints of its headlights in the W140 rendering.

But to be honest, we liked the rendering he did of the rear more than the new one that just got released, which targets the front end. The way the artist created fake vents in the front bumper clashes with the design of that era. But at least it looks menacing, with those tinted windows. All the old dictators called; they want to know where this is available to buy.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
