The most recent update for iPhones is likely the one to blame for a series of CarPlay problems that users are now complaining about on Apple’s forums.
In the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed that the number of people blaming iOS 13.4.1 for a broken down CarPlay experience is increasing, and now there are multiple reports posted out there. However, worth noting is that this isn’t a widespread glitch for now, so for example, CarPlay runs just fine on my head unit with iOS 13.4.1 installed on the iPhone 11.
But users on Apple’s forums [1, 2, 3] claim that CarPlay stopped working after installing the iOS update on their iPhones. Everything was working fine before the update, with no other changes made in the meantime, they say.
“CarPlay was working on my iPhone XR as of two days ago 5/5. I updated my phone one on 5/6 to iOS 13.4.1, and today 5/7 I plugged the phone into my car via USB cable and I have issues. CarPlay shows up but when I try to do anything, CarPlay stops working and is disconnected. I tried a new cable and same result,” one user explains.
For the time being, however, a workaround doesn’t seem to exist, and given Apple’s walled garden, there’s not much affected users can do. If anything, those who haven’t yet updated their iPhones should stick with the older version of iOS if they are afraid they could hit this issue.
At this point, it’s still not known if Apple is aware of the problem, but we reached out to the company for more information and will update this post if an answer is offered. In the meantime, the only thing you can do if CarPlay isn’t working as expected is to reach out to Apple’s support services and ask for assistance.
