Apple is unlikely to release any new features for iPhone and CarPlay in the next iOS updates, as the company wants to focus entirely on fixing bugs and improving under-the-hood performance.
The latest iOS update brought several key CarPlay goodies, including third-party support for navigation apps on the dashboard. This means apps like Google Maps and Waze can replace Apple Maps on the multi-view screen once support is added by the parent companies.
But the next iOS 13 updates won’t come with anything new for CarPlay, according to reports, so now all hopes for new features behind the wheel are on iOS 14 due in the summer.
Apple will stick with iOS 13.4.x updates, which means an iOS 13.5 beta is very unlikely. So new features for CarPlay are now more likely to be included in iOS 14, which as per Apple’s typical schedule, is supposed to go live in the fall of this year.
Apple will show a preview of iOS 14 in June at the WWDC conference, with a public beta to go live for testers shortly after that. In other words, it should only take a few more months to find out if new features are coming to CarPlay with iOS 14.
As usual, Apple has remained completely tight-lipped on these reports, but everything seems to make sense at first glance.
And it’s all because WWDC is just around the corner and Apple is believed to be hard at work on polishing the first beta of iOS 14. All fixes included in the next iOS 13.4 updates (both beta and stable) will also be part of iOS 14, as the builds shipping in the coming months will share much of the code.
For now, it’s very clear that we shouldn’t hold our breath for new CarPlay features, as iOS 14 is still several months away. The good news is that Apple will share more news on this front in just a few weeks.
