Car parades have been done for a very long time and they will probably get done many years from now. In recent weeks, though, car parades have seen a rise in frequency, given the fact that regular gatherings are, for the time being, banned.
With social distancing being the norm in most territories around the world, people have been appealing to strangers and, in particular, to the community of car enthusiasts for help to give young ‘uns a very special birthday. This was the case in the video at the bottom of the page, of a boy who was turning 10 and his parents wanted to give him a racecar parade for his big day.
Cars Across Texas complied, sending word out in order to have as many vehicles in the parade, which would then go by the boy’s house revving their engines. The boy lives in a residential area outside Houston, Texas, and from the video posted to YouTube, it’s clear that his family warned neighbors beforehand of what was about to happen.
For starters, the video includes plenty of decent shots at the cars taking part in the parade, including a very loud Mustang and several Corvettes, with the ZR1 getting the most love. Before they reached the neighborhood, drivers even engaged in a spot of racing but, once arrived at their destination, they strove to behave.
The line of cars passed the boy’s house once and some of the drivers decided to go back again, which is when trouble started. Trouble is referred to in this video as “Karen,” specifically “Karen number one,” “Karen number two” and “Karen Husband,” meaning a bunch of folks who blocked traffic complaining of the noise.
The irony is that, while they were complaining that this kind of events shouldn’t happen in a residential area, they were literally preventing the cars from leaving and thus, making the noise that was so bothering to them. It’s truly a baffling and hilarious thing to see.
All three Karens ended up calling the cops, and in another surprising turn of events, some of them got arrested. Police even waved and smiled at the drivers, since they had done nothing wrong, at least in theory.
This particular video has gone viral, fueling up heated discussions on whether loud car parades are ok for residential areas. The consensus seems to be that the first Karen, the woman who first stepped on the road and blocked the cars, was in the wrong: this wasn’t “drag racing,” like she claimed, and it didn’t seem to bother anyone but herself and a couple of people more.
That said, the drivers should have shown a bit more consideration towards the neighbors, commenters say. Even the narrator admits on a couple of occasions that the noise will be getting people upset and that the Mustang is unbearably loud – and then laughs about it. Perhaps one tour of the neighborhood would have sufficed, for this reason alone: it would have given the birthday boy his surprise parade, but still not have caused too much of a disruption.
All in all, here is a racecar parade that will go down in Internet history (for about 15 minutes), for being a slice of quarantine life that rivals even scripted comedy.
