While the Tesla Model S will surely remain imprinted in the pages of history forever for its approach on the auto industry altogether, something was missing from its offerings. Yes, we’re talking about a convertible here.
Sure the Model S is an emission free car that will basically get you from point A to point B in a hurry (especially in the P85D guise) and completely free in theory but it all gets tiresome after a while, doesn’t it? It’s just too quiet in there.

Well, if you got tired of the same old story every day, a company in California is offering to chop off your car’s roof and turn it into a convertible. How does that sound for a change?

Of course, if you don’t have a Tesla lying around the house you can get one that has already had its roof chopped off, like this one we found on eBay for $125,000. According to the description, it’s a P85+ Performance Package model with every possible optional feature ticked off.

That’s a hefty $36,000 increase over the price of a fully decked Tesla Model S P85 model and it seems like a lot initially. That's not the case if we’re to look at what the manufacturer of such ‘creations’ is asking for converting your car into a drop top.

The guys from Newport Convertible Engineering California are demanding no less than $29,000 for a soft-top conversion and $49,000 for a hard-top alternative. So where do we stand here? It seems like the car advertised has the soft top choice and the price difference is pretty big, what’s the catch?

Well, we couldn’t find any, other than the fact that this seems to be the only such model available, that you can actually buy at the moment. The question on everyone’s mind, though, is how will this car fare in case of a rollover crash... after all, you can’t just convert cars like this without adding some kind of protection for its occupants, right?

In the meantime, if you’re really into convertibles and EVs and you have $125,000 lost somewhere in a drawer, by all means go for it but just be careful when driving it.
