You Can Live Like a Pirate in Johnny Depp’s $55 Million French Village

A good pirate needs a good ship and a place to hide. Assuming you have the former, here is a possible candidate for the latter.

A-listers will always complain about how fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and how the biggest downside to the many millions in the bank is the loss of privacy. Johnny Depp is the best example in this sense.

Once a true Hollywood darling, Depp never courted fame or media attention. This would probably explain his acquired taste for real estate; the fancier, the better. Truth be told, no one imagines the Pirates of the Caribbean star as an all-car guy. If anything, he’s a superyacht, own-your-own-private-island type of dude.

Depp owns a small but impressive collection of classic cars and motorcycles but is most famous for his astounding real estate portfolio, which includes, along with an undeveloped island in the Bahamas, an actual, real-life French village in Plan de la Tour. The location is just 10 miles (16 miles) away from the harbor of Saint-Tropez, where Depp and his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis could easily dock in their custom, Turquoise Yachts-made superyacht Vajoliroja, which they bought in 2007.

Much like the superyacht, who found the second owner in Harry Potter author JK Rowling following Depp’s split from Vanessa, the French estate is also looking to change hands. A rumor in the narrow niche of ultra-luxe real estate has it that Depp is about to list it again, this time with an asking price of $55.5 million.

The estate was on the market a couple of times before, being listed between 2015 and 2016 for prices ranging between $25 million and $63 million, but never sold. Maybe the third time is a charm, and the right pirate billionaire comes along.

The $55.5 million would be money well spent. The estate is impressive: it is an entire 19th-century hameau, a village. Depp bought it in 2001 after he learned it was abandoned and fell in love with the location upon visiting. For the next 15 years and $10 million of his own money, he completely renovated the place, designing a compound that counts with a total of 14 bedrooms and 15 baths across one main building and six guest cottages. Also on-site, you will find two pools, a skate park, and its own private restaurant, all surrounded by 300-year-old trees, olive gardens, and vineyards.

The main residence is 4,500 square-feet (418 square-meters) with five bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms, one sandy pool, and a smaller one. The village’s old church has been turned into a guest house, an old wagon serves the same purpose, while a stone-built construction serves as an actual pirate’s lair. Also on the premises, you will find an art studio, a fully-equipped gym, a wine cave, the bistro/private restaurant with a professional kitchen and bar, a romantic hunter’s cabin, and a children’s playroom.

In short, this village will have every one of your needs covered, even if your family is on the larger side. As for the means to get here, you can just leave your pirate’s ship docked in harbor and drive home.

Perhaps the strongest selling point of this estate is that every décor and finishing touch was done by hand by Depp himself. During the 15-year renovation, the actor famously refused to use an interior designer's services, as Alexander Kraft, chairman & CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty France, which held the listing in 2016, noted at the time. “As a consequence, the estate is not a ritzy showplace, but an utterly charming family home that truly reflects Johnny Depp’s unique character and taste.”

The family home spawns a reported total living space of 12,900-14,500 square-feet (1,198-1,347 square-meters). Because no pirate likes cramped lodgings.
