Even though the future was supposed to bring us some really cool exoskeleton machines, the day people use them on a daily basis is still not here. Nor are we traveling through space and fighting with huge aliens that spit acid and have a smaller head in their mouth. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a Caterpillar P-5000 Powered Work Loader, like the one Ellen Ripley used in desperation to engage Xenomorph Queen in a hand-to-hand combat. Well, a scale model of it anyway.
Commonly referred to as a Power Loader, it was a fictional machine humans aboard of the USS Sulaco would use to move heavy stuff around the ship. It was envisioned as a commercial mechanized exoskeleton that would also help with widespread industrial use. We’re talking about Ridley Scott’s commercial breakthrough, the science-fiction horror film Alien, of course.
Anyway, Power Loaders are equipped with hydraulic “claws” that can be used to hold and manipulate a variety of objects. The Colonial Marines also utilized the Exosuit, the military version of the P-5000. Everybody will always remember this little clawed beast as what the main character of the film used to get the alien off the spacecraft.
The 33’’ tall and 25’’ wide scale model is allegedly recreated from the original blueprints, which means no detail has been spared to make this the most accurate Power Loader replica ever created. It features a webbing operator harness made of real material, a working light-up hazard light on top, and an accurate weathered finish.
Made of heavyweight polystone and mixed media, then hand painted to the finest detail, the Hollywood collectable can be found online and costs $1,200.
